Using a Third-Party Router with CenturyLink™ High Speed Internet
NOTICE: CenturyLink™ will only provide support for routers that were purchased from CenturyLink™. The following information is provided as a courtesy to those customers who have a third-party (non-CenturyLink™) router and need information to configure their router to work with the CenturyLink™ DSL modem. CenturyLink™ Technical Support staff will not discuss the configuration of routers that were not purchased from CenturyLink™ beyond referring you to this document.
Configure the modem and a single computer to test the DSL line. If you are unable to connect a single computer in this manner, it may be necessary to call CenturyLink™ Technical Support for help setting up your single computer connection. CenturyLink™ Technical Support staff will not assist in the setup of equipment that was not purchased from CenturyLink™.
Power off and disconnect all DSL/Networking devices.
Connect and power on devices in the following order.
DSL phone jack to modem using the phone cord provided with your modem.
Modem to third-party router. (This is most likely connected with a standard Ethernet cable, but check the documentation that came with your router to make sure you are connected with the appropriate type of cable.)
Router to one or more computers with standard Ethernet cables or through a wireless connection.
Configure your computer(s) to communicate with your router. Refer to the router documentation to obtain information for this setup. (CenturyLink™ Technical Support staff will not assist with this configuration.)
Verify that the routers Local (LAN) IP is set to something other than 192.168.1.1. CenturyLink™ suggests 192.168.3.1.
Test your connection by opening a web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox etc) and going to a webpage. (www.centurylink.com/hsisupport)
If you are unable to browse the web, you have two options.
Call the router manufacturer for assistance in configuring your router to work with your DSL line.
Call CenturyLink™ Technical Support for assistance. You will be asked to remove the router and connect a single computer to the modem. The CenturyLink™ representative will then be able to assist with the configuration of DSL connection software on your computer. Once the computer is connected and browsing while directly connected to the modem, you will be referred to the router manufacturer for assistance with configuring the router to work with your DSL line.
** Note: If you need to have ports forwarded on to your computer for certain applications, your router and CenturyLink™ modem may need to be configured differently to allow this connection.
